Spooling/Unspooling machines are used to wind/unwind material on and off of spools. The process usually involves a means of reeling the material on to a take-up spool and/or dispensing the material off of a supply or pay-off spool. Small, very fine wire, tube, sheet, and large cable are all examples of materials that can be processed using these types of machines.
The payoff spool is driven by a servo motor and dispenses material. It is tension controlled using a dancer which provides servo loop control to the spool motor to maintain the dancers position. This closed-loop servo system is usually the best way to control movement of material onto and off of spools. Line speed is also controlled when dispensing material.
The take-up spool is driven by a servo motor and reels in the material. It is tension controlled using a dancer which provides servo loop control to the spool motor to maintain the dancers position. This closed-loop servo system is usually the best way to control movement of material onto and off of spools.
Usually a smooth, consistent, level wind is required when winding material on to a take-up spool. This “level winding” maximizes the amount of material and assists with a smooth flow when unwinding the material. To assist with this “level winding”, a traversing mechanism is added to the take-up spool. The traversing drive moves material back and forth on a pitch (traverse movement per spool rotation) that is about 5-10% greater than the width or diameter of the product size.

These functions can be done as part of the same machine (like with a respooler) and can also be done on either end of a specialized processing machine.
